文匯報 2020年10月5日 【恒大譯站】怎一個「和」字了得 翻譯初學者大多不能確切掌握「詞無定譯」的原則,反而通常會採用「一詞一譯」的方法來應付不同的上下文,而他們那「一譯」往往就是自己最熟悉那個意思,不是第一個學會的、先入為主的,就是見得最多的那個用法。例如,初學者碰到「and」往往會不管三七二十一譯作「和」,但其實通常不妥。 例一:在一本小說裏,女主角要到一個叫Gordonwood的地方探望姨姨,早上從倫敦出發,坐了整天蒸氣火車,晚上才到達Gordonwood附近的城鎮,下車時傾盆大雨,於是進了一家旅館先過一夜,翌日早上再去姨姨家。原文描寫她在旅館餐廳吃晚飯時感到舒適自在,慶幸自己決定正確:「I was glad now that I hadn’t gone immediately to Gordonwood. I would be relaxed and refreshed in the morning and in much better shape to meet my aunt.」學生譯為:「……我會在第二天早上,輕鬆從容,精神煥發和打扮得更好去找姨姨。」其它問題不說,「and」譯為「和」就不妥,因為「和」只能連接名詞詞組,而且譯者把「relaxed」、「refreshed」、「in much better shape」當作並列,沒留意到「in the morning」已經把前兩項歸納為一組,與第三項分開。 這裏的「and」其實帶出結果–因為「relaxed」、「refreshed」,「所以 / 這樣就」「in much better shape to meet my aunt」。 例二:某本談節食的書說,賣瘦身產品的商家最樂見大家長胖,因為可以推出更多瘦身產品,而不論新產品的「必瘦」承諾包裝得如何花俏,「…when we tear it off we always find…
