2019年12月16日 【恒大譯站】上網管不管用 看常識夠不夠 筆者跟同學分享經驗時,常常把這句話掛在口邊:「不要光靠上網!」在這個5G時代,竟然有人講出這句話,真是「離經叛道」。請各位稍安毋躁,先讓我講個故事。 幾年前,我請同學做翻譯,原文談及香港法院審理的一宗案件,文中出現了「Department of Justice」這個特區政府機關的名稱。很多同學將「Department of Justice」翻譯作「司法部」。錯了!美國的「Department of Justice」才是「司法部」,內地的「司法部」是「Ministry of Justice」,香港特別行政區政府的「Department of Justice」是「律政司」。 我問同學:「原文談及香港法院審理的一宗案件,為何大家都把『Department of Justice』翻譯成美國政府的『司法部』呢?」同學們異口同聲說:「上網。」我再三追問,方知道他們原來不知道特區政府也有個「Department of Justice」,但是中文名稱和美國的「Department of Justice」不一樣。我再問同學:「大家唸高中通識科時,老師不就介紹過特區政府的組織嗎?」有些同學說沒有學過,有些同學說彷彿學過,又彷彿沒有學過。 筆者跟同學分享經驗時,還會把另一句話掛在口邊:「翻譯和會議傳譯不僅是語文能力問題,更是知識問題。『識得字多,識得嘢少』,當不了專業的翻譯員和傳譯員。」這個年代,人手一部智能電話,彈指之間,無論何時何地,資訊都唾手可得,但如果不知道律政司是特區政府主管檢控工作的機關(說得精確一點應該是律政司的刑事檢控科),那不管是手握5G電話,還是功能最強勁的平板電腦,結果都是一樣:翻錯,因為你可能以為各地政府的「Department of Justice」都叫「司法部」。 同學聽到我這番話,都顯得有點垂頭喪氣,彷彿如今方知道他們一向擁戴的歌手表演時都要靠別人幕後代唱。我馬上安慰他們說:「不要氣餒,互聯網還是有用的,但要用得聰明一點,除了要到官方網站,還要在動筆翻譯前先掌握一些基本知識。」 幾年前我跟另一班同學討論翻譯問題。我問他們: 「『Official language』一詞應怎樣翻?」同學異口同聲說:「 官方語言。」「那麽香港法例第五章《Official Languages Ordinance》中的 『official languages』呢?」同學聽到我提出這個問題,覺得我一定「別有用心」。我跟着說:「請大家跟我一起上網。」大家都呆了!因為大家都知道我最討厭學生在上課時上網打電玩。我介紹同學瀏覽《電子版香港法例 Hong Kong e-Legislation》官方網站,他們才發現《Official Languages Ordinance》的中文名稱是《法定語文條例》。不錯, 「official language(s)」是「法定語文」,不是「官方語言」。 於是有同學說:「那麽我們將『official language(s)』 翻成『法定語文』, 一定萬無一失!」 我說:「不,可能有失。」接着我帶他們瀏覽《香港特別行政區基本法》官方網站。他們發現《基本法》第九條也提到「official language」 一詞,中文叫「正式語文」。不錯,是「正式語文」,不是「法定語文」,也不是「官方語言」。原來「official language(s)」 一詞有多個「official translation」。嚴格來說,能否準確翻譯「official language(s)」 一詞,跟譯者的「language」能力好不好並沒有必然關係,但和法律常識有關。筆者還會把另一句話掛在口邊:「我從事翻譯和會議傳譯工作30多年,每天都在學習。」■ 張敬文博士 香港恒生大學翻譯學院講師…
