Recasting—David Hawkes and the Fourfold Dadaist Path of Creative Translation

After introducing some examples of collaboration in translating Chinese literature, Professor John Minford started telling the story about the translation project of The Story of the Stone undertaken by his master and father-in-law, Professor David Hawkes, and himself. The letters between the two were affectionate—not only had they profiled the special teacher-son relationship, but they also revealed how a translation master had progressed on his path.
