Module Description
This module builds on the theoretical and practical foundation laid in Translation for Advertising and equips students with professional knowledge in bilingual writing, translating and copywriting. Students will be given the opportunities to write and translate copies of considerable difficulty and complexity, and to cope with the operational challenges which are likely to be encountered in bilingual marketing communication. Special attention is given to particular text categories and subject-matter knowledge that are pertinent to current market demands. Teaching materials and assignments will be adapted from authentic examples as far as possible.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. master the basic techniques required for writing copy briefs;
  2. present their ideas bilingually and biculturally;
  3. demonstrate their understanding of the stylistic differences between Chinese and English copies;
  4. acquire the skills required for different stages of copywriting, translating, editing and copyfitting; and
  5. adopt appropriate strategies for translating/adapting copies between Chinese and English.
