STFL Public Lecture — Technology for Medical Translation

Dr Siu Sai Cheong, Associate Professor of the School of Translation and Foreign Languages and Programme Director of Bachelor of Translation with Business (Honours) and MA in Translation (Computer-Aided Translation) Programmes, delivered a public lecture entitled “Technology for Medical Translation” on 18 May 2021.

Dr Siu pointed out that the pandemic had brought great impacts on our daily life. It also accelerated the development of translation in various areas, such as medical texts, virtual events, e-commerce and digital entertainment. Among them, medical translation has grabbed significant attention. Accurate and accessible medical translation can enhance personal wellness, promote health education and benefit medical research and development. Medical translation includes medical consultation, professional conferences, documentation of drugs and healthcare webpages.

Dr Siu mentioned medical translators should possess good command of language, translation skills, cultural awareness, medical knowledge, and motivation for continuous learning. Dr Siu emphasized that translation technology was key to accuracy and speed in medical translation. He introduced a wide range of hands-on electronic tools and reiterated that translators should make use of technology to enhance the efficiency and reach of medical translation.
