Public Lecture by Prof. Li Changshuan:
Translation: A process of discovering and re-presenting the truth
Professor Li Changshuan, Professor and Executive Dean of the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation at Beijing Foreign Studies University, visited the School of Translation and delivered a public lecture to students.
Professor Li is a seasoned practitioner in the field of translation, particularly in legal translation and interpretation. Professor Li believes that translation is not simply a conversion of words, but a process involving comprehension, expression and adaptation. Translators should be able to apply critical thinking to identify issues and work on the target text adaptively, in order to reveal the meaning of the original text. Illustrated with examples, Professor Li elaborated various methods of discovering problems and their solutions in the translation process.
Professor Li also toured around the learning facilities of the School of Translation and was impressed by the purpose-built Fung Yiu King Hall and the advanced interpreting facilities at the Translation and Interpretation Laboratory.
Professor Li uses concrete examples to examine the translation process.
