The 22nd International Symposium on Translation and Interpreting Teaching
The Graduate Institute of Cross-cultural Studies, Fu Jen Catholic University, in collaboration with the School of Translation, Hang Seng Management College, organized the 22nd International Symposium on Translation and Interpreting Teaching from 2 to 3 June 2018 in Taipei. With the theme “Translation and Knowledge Management”, the Symposium consisted of three keynote speeches and eight sessions of paper presentations. Specialists and scholars from Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan and Japan gathered to share their latest research findings in the field of translation studies.
The School of Translation invited Dr. K M Cheung, a leading expert in professional translation and interpreting, to deliver a keynote speech on the first day of the Symposium. In his speech “Equal status of Chinese and English: a reality or formality? Exploring the dynamics of bilingualism in Hong Kong from the perspective of Speech Act Theory”, he explored the use of Chinese and English in different legal contexts in Hong Kong.
On the second day, Dr. S C Siu and Mr. S Y Siu from the School of Translation presented papers on technology for medical translation, namely “The Quality of the Neural Machine Translation of Public Health Information in Hong Kong (English-Chinese Translation)” and “Traditional Chinese Medicine, Translation, and Technology: A framework for the Development of a Chinese-English Parallel Corpus of Medical Manuscripts in Dunhuang”.
The Symposium was concluded with the International Medical Translation Forum and Workshop, where medical practitioners and language professionals were invited to exchange their professional views on medical translation and knowledge management. The fruitful discussions at the Symposium opened up exciting possibilities of translation research and translation and interpreting training.
