This talk discusses some interesting Hong Kong court cases involving disputes over rival translations of litigation document with a view to showing that to resolve such disputes, very often the court must go beyond language and grammar to ascertain the cultural meaning of a text. The cliché that understanding a language is understanding its culture becomes a guiding principle for resolving rival translations in litigation. The speaker will demonstrate the use of this guiding principle when introducing the interesting Hong Kong court cases in the talk.
