Translation Culture in Hong Kong Talk Series: PR with Chinese Characteristics Vs Anglo-American PR—Dilemma in PR Translation (Co-organised by the School of Translation and Hong Kong Central Library)

Speaker: Dr WONG Kim Fan (Adjunct Associate Professor)

Venue: Lecture Theatre, Hong Kong Central Library

In this seminar, we are going to discuss the translation strategies used in PR translations in Hong Kong. Should we use “standardisation” strategy to provide a text closed to the original form and market or use “adaptation” to recreate the text to minimise cultural differences? Which information should be retained and which should be rewritten or deleted? Which information should be made specific and which should be abstractised? Is it more important to establish the so-called “PR with the Chinese characteristics” or to create international PR? Is it possible to strike a balance between the two?
