STFL Public Lecture – CAT Education@HSUHK
Dr Siu Sai Cheong, Associate Professor of the School of Translation and Foreign Languages (STFL) and Programme Directors of Bachelor of Translation with Business (Honours) and MA in Translation (Computer-Aided Translation) Programmes, delivered a public lecture entitled “CAT Education@HSUHK” on 24 February 2022.
Computer-aided translation (CAT) plays an increasing role in the digital age. To enhance the quality and speed of translation, the School developed various CAT modules during the past ten years. Besides the traditional written translation and interpreting, Dr Siu pointed out, translation was also involved in web localisation, video translation, game localisation, software localisation, etc.
Dr Siu further explained how CAT education was incorporated into the translation curriculum to help students to have a better understanding of translation technology. The four key features of CAT education were introduced.
- Providing students with a wide range of CAT skills such as translation tools selection and basic programming
- Equipping students with specialised translation skills in professional areas, such as business, culture, science, etc.
- Assisting students to acquire, through translation technology, the skills for cross-lingual activities like mobile app translation, web translation, digital marketing, etc.
- Offering hands-on experience of using different applications in the Translation Technology Workshop and Virtual CAT Learning Centre.
Translation technology develops rapidly. Dr Siu encouraged the interested audience to enrol on the relevant translation programme for a deeper understanding of translation technology.
