Research

The School of Translation and Foreign Languages at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong actively engages in cutting-edge research across translation, interpreting and digital humanities. Two major centres underpin our work: the Research Centre for Translation of Buddhist Texts (RCTBT), which explores Buddhist scripture translation through historical, linguistic and AI-assisted digital approaches, and the GILT Research Centre, which advances studies on Globalisation, Internationalisation, Localisation and Translation, particularly in the context of new technologies. Staff research also extends to diverse topics including AI and translation, food and cultural translation, interpreter training and corpora, Wikipedia as a multilingual translation platform and metaphor in popular science discourse. Recent outputs include international conference papers, book chapters, journal articles, books and public engagement initiatives. The School pioneers research into areas such as team-based Buddhist translation, the evaluation of large language models in translation and the impact of AI on translator training. Our research supports HSUHK's Strategic Plan 2023-28, especially in fostering research excellence, enhancing globalisation efforts, integrating technology into humanities subjects and contributing to the understanding and preservation of cultural heritage.
