Dr Cheung King Man, Lecturer of the School of Translation and Foreign Languages, delivered an online talk entitled "Financial + Translation" on 8 February 2021.

Dr Cheung emphasized that to understand and translate texts in the fields of economics and finance, students must have ample knowledge of these disciplines. Illustrating this point with a number of real-life examples, Dr Cheung explained that there were words which should not be interpreted literally in financial texts. Technical terms and proper nouns should be correctly translated so as to avoid misunderstanding. It was also important to pay extra attention to figures.

Dr Cheung concluded the talk by reiterating the parallel importance of good command of language and extra-linguistic knowledge. Students were encouraged to acquire knowledge of different disciplines by reading broadly and cultivating a better sense of the public affairs in not only the region but also the world.
