The module also equips students with important computer (-aided) translation skills, such as pre-editing, post-editing, bilingual alignment, and term extraction.

This module provides students with the professional knowledge and skills they need to work in the world of translation, both as a freelance translator and as a language service provider. The module covers topics such as the language industry, translation ethics, useful tools for text processing and business management, and the advanced skills of providing language services and managing translation enterprises.

Description:
The module introduces students to business and legal translation. It enables students to understand the characteristics of business and legal language in terms of diction, formats, and styles of business and legal writings, and helps them grasp the basic principles, strategies and techniques for translating business and legal texts such as IPO documents, commercial contracts, minutes, guidelines, rules and regulations between English and Chinese. The ultimate aim is to train students to work efficiently in the bilingual business and legal settings of both Hong Kong and the PRC.

Description:
This module enhances students' knowledge and skills of online project management. Students will work as translation teams on computer-aided translation projects so as to get familiar with (1) the process of collaborative translation and (2) online collaboration tools and cloud translation platforms. Topics include team management, online database management, and collaborative translation projects in various areas.

Description:
This module develops students' competence in translating scientific and technical texts between English and Chinese. It enables students to understand the characteristics of scientific and technical language and helps them grasp the principles, strategies and techniques for translating scientific and technical documents, including popular science news, user guides, product documentation, technical data sheets and instructions, scientific research proposals and reports, journal articles, and patents.

This module equips students with the knowledge and skills required for the translation of documentation for global supply chain management between English and Chinese. Students will gain a solid understanding of the key concepts of international trade documentation and get hands-on experience in translating transaction documents, import / export documents, shipping documents, insurance documents, and banking documents.

This module develops students' competence in translating philosophical, historical and literary texts between English and Chinese with the help of technology. Students will get familiar with a range of electronic tools for conducting background research, finding useful expressions and enhancing word choice. They will learn how to analyse and solve problems with the help of dictionaries, thesauri, parallel texts, rhyming tools, and other language aids.

Description:
This module aims to familiarise students with the knowledge, skills and know-how of translating digital entertainment, including videos, games, digital literature and comics, and materials related to virtual events. Students gain a solid understanding of the characteristics of bilingual communication in the world of digital entertainment, and explore translation principles, techniques and computer tools used in the digital entertainment industry.

This module helps students develop the knowledge and skills required for the design and development of bilingual websites. Students will gain a good understanding of the key concepts of web development and get hands-on experience in developing bilingual web applications and localising websites. Topics include (1) the key concepts of localization and internationalisation, (2) the structure, design and interactivity of bilingual websites, and (3) best practice in localisation.

This module develops students' competence in providing professional language services for bilingual digital marketing campaigns (English / Chinese). Students will get familiar with a wide range of digital marketing channels (e.g., search engines, digital displays, email, social media, online video, and mobile devices) and acquire skills in creating useful and engaging bilingual content accordingly.

This module provides students with the knowledge and skills required for the design and development of translation applications. Students will develop a good understanding of programming methodology and natural language processing techniques so as to design a range of bilingual applications (English / Chinese), including dictionaries, sentence databases, and tools for language learning and bilingual communication.

Description:
This module explores methods in corpus-based translation studies and the digital humanities. It helps students develop the ability to discover and explore translation issues (e.g., analysing translated texts and translation strategies) with the aid of technology. Topics include theoretical models, essential tools for translation studies, data management, data visualisation, text analysis, and the use of maps and timelines.

Description:
This module discusses latest technology and research trends in selected areas of study, such as machine translation, translation memories, terminology management, and language technology. The module also develops the research, analytical and critical evaluation abilities of students by providing them with a platform to present their findings of research on translation technology and language services and engage in academic discussion with peers. The module enhances their academic writing and presentation skills and prepares them for further research work.

Description:
This module discusses technology for interpreters and explores ways to enhance the development of interpreting technology in response to the practical needs of interpreters and the nature of different interpreting tasks. Students learn about the design of interpreting technology and get hands-on experience in the development of speech applications.

In order to be eligible for the award of the Master of Arts in Translation (Computer-Aided Translation), students are required to
- complete a minimum of 24 credits as laid down in the Programme curriculum;
- complete the four core modules;
- complete at least one elective module in Area 1 (Professional Language Services (Computer-aided));
- complete at least one elective module in Area 2 (Translation Technology); and
- obtain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
