Addressing the needs of the fast-growing language service industry, the School of Translation and Foreign Languages at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK), considered the premier translation school in the region, offers two unique master’s programmes, specialising in business and legal translation and computer-aided translation. The two programmes provide purpose-built and state-of-the-art facilities to support students’ learning. There is also a team of experienced and knowledgeable teaching staff with expertise in all areas of translation.

Master of Arts in Translation (Business and Legal)

The world is increasingly globalised, and Hong Kong, as a historically bilingual society, is well-positioned to become the business and legal hub in Asia. The growing interactions between people and cultures results in rising demands for high-qualiy and high-speed translation.

Hang Seng University’s Master of Arts in Translation (Business and Legal) (MA-TBL) Programme is one of its kind in the region. It offers exclusive training to equip students with essential skills of business and legal translation and knowledge of its operation in Chinese communities.

Dr Shelby Chan, Associate Dean and Programme Director of MA-TBL Programme, says the Programme keeps abreast of the times to give students up-to-date training and practical skills. She explains, “The Programme aims to strengthen students’ linguistic and translation skills, facilitating them to master the techniques of translating in business and legal contexts. Students can select modules based on their interest and career pathway. We have tailor-made the courses with the latest professional essentials which are valuable tools to help students excel in their career.”

Master of Arts in Translation (Computer-Aided Translation)

With the emergence of the digital revolution, the demand for language professionals with expertise in both translation and technology has increased rapidly.

The Master of Arts in Translation (Computer-Aided Translation) (MA-TCAT) Programme, offered by Hang Seng University, serves society’s need in this fast growing area, as CAT is indispensable to aspiring professionals interested in translation work.

“Our Programme is the only master’s programme in Hong Kong specialising in CAT,” says Dr Siu Sai-cheong, Associate Professor and Programme Director of MA-TCAT Programme. He adds that the Programme has three key objectives: “First is to help students explore the use of CAT to improve the quality and productivity of their work in three areas: accuracy, speed and cost reduction. In addition, our innovative and practical courses equip students with specialised translation skills to advance their career and enhance their competitiveness in the job market. Lastly, we aim to nurture bilingual graduates who are proficient in language technology.”

The Programme facilitates students to take advantage of the emerging market, he adds. “The new trend is a combination of IT and translation, and our courses, such as Technology for Bilingual Web Development, equip students with skills which are very much in demand in all sectors of society, including business, social media, government, banking, marketing, management, etc.”
