This module is designed for students who aspire to carve out for themselves a career in administration, publishing and advertising. The topics include various semantic approaches to the analysis of different types of word meaning in a text and address the key issues of functional grammar pertaining to translation studies.

Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

1. analyse and describe the semantic structure of a sentence in English and Chinese;
   
2. apply the knowledge of semantic structure to the accurate translation of technical texts between English and Chinese; and
   
3. evaluate and comment critically on a translated technical text using their knowledge of semantic structure.
