Module Description
This module aims to refine interpreting skills in actual conference situations on the basis of what students have learned from previous interpreting modules. There are simulations of conference situations with invited guest speakers, with emphasis on analysing the problems and challenges posed by real-life interpreting practice. Other objectives of the module are: to create critical awareness in the students with regard to their own processes and positions as interpreters; and to strengthen their research competency in Interpreting Studies by familiarising them with the theories, tools and methods of the discipline.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:
  1. perform conference interpreting in a professional manner;
  2. make a decision on using different modes of interpretation (e.g., simultaneous, consecutive, whispering) depending on the type of meeting and working environment;
  3. develop self-reflexivity on their own interpreting performances; and
  4. comprehend and cope with the sociocultural issues of conference interpreting practice.
